The Best Hard Rock, Metal and Alternative Rock Albums of All Time
Sometimes nothing sounds better than an overdriven electric guitar matched by a powerful gritty voice and a pulsating rhythm. Led Zeppelin took Rock music to its logical conclusion with their first album in 1969, stripping it back to its blues essence and adding maximum power, giving birth to Hard Rock. This set the formula for a new genre, that was often followed to strictly to cliched results but certainly had another innovators and classics in the next two decades.
The same year, with their self-titled debut album, Black Sabbath gave birth to a different, but similar, genre that shared much of the same fan base: Metal. This removed the blues influence, added a more regular beat and took influences from jazz and classical music, giving emphasis to musicianship. Whilst hard rock lyrics were about sex, drugs and rock'n'roll; Metal singers sung about the devil and other dark matters. Thrash gave the genre a new kick in the 1980s - playing even faster and harder.
By the end of the 1980s both genres were being shaken up. The influence of punk was finally felt as a wave of new Alternative Rock groups broke into the mainstream in the USA- led by Nirvana and the grunge scene but also including earlier pioneers such as noise-rockers Sonic Youth and funk-rockers Jane's Addiction. This was still overdriven guitars with without the showmanship and cliche of the worst Hard Rock. In the early 2000s Garage Rock gave Alternative Rock its last popularity wave. Since 2010 the genre has been dominated by pre-existing bands.
Metal was also transformed in the mid-1990s, with the influence of Punk and other genres creating a wave of new Alternative Metal genres: such as Hardcore and Emo. Metal has always relied on a highly committed fan base and remains in rude health as sub-culture.
