The Best R&B/Soul and Reggae Albums of All Time

Rhythm and Blues, or R&B (or RnB) was the more uptempo, party music that derived from the Blues and Jazz in the 1940s. Since then it has always been a parallel form of Pop music, with a focus on heartfelt emotion and the power of the human voice - mostly created and enjoyed by Black artists but at many times in the the last 70 years crossing over to a mainstream audience. Over the years there have been many different forms of R&B. When Ray Charles and Sam Cooke mixed the divine with the profane (Gospel music and earthbound romantic lyrics) they created something new: Soul, this would go on to dominate the next 20 years and include great record labels from Motown to Stax recording some of the greatest music ever made. In 1965 James Brown got a New Bag and created Funk. By the 1980s smoother Philly soul had given way to Disco, and in the 1980s Soul largely faded into generic Pop. But in the early 1990s there was a jump-start - the strong influence of Hip-Hop created the new form of modern RnB. In the 21st century, becoming ever-closer with Hip-Hop, this has overtaken Rock to become one of the most popular forms of music the world over.
